The choice between an attached or detached garage may have you scratching your head in indecision.  That’s okay!  Robin Ford is here to help.

When you build a custom home, you have the option of choosing how you’re going to design your garage.  There are great benefits that come with having a garage, either way–protection from storms and snow, protection from theft and vandalism, and more.  But, the choice between an attached or detached garage may have you scratching your head in indecision.  That’s okay!  Robin Ford is here to help you come to a solid conclusion.  Read on to see if an attached or detached garage is right for you.

Advantages and Disadvantages of an Attached Garage

The main draw of an attached garage is the fact that it is easily accessible.  This makes it perfect for easy access storage, and it means your car is never far away.  An attached garage can save space in your yard and will make a larger space for kids and pets to play.  However, it could potentially change your architecture, and it will alter your curb appeal.  If you store dangerous chemicals or tools in your garage, children have slightly better access to the space, which could make an attached garage unsafe.  It’s likely you should evaluate what you use your garage for, the size of your yard, and how you want the rest of your custom home to be designed if you’re thinking of building an attached garage.

Advantages and Disadvantages of a Detached Garage

If your garage is being used for woodwork, building projects, or anything else that involves loud noise and chemical odors, you may want to consider a detached garage.  This prevents disturbances to the rest of the family, and allows for work to be done in comfortable solitude.  It also functions similarly in terms of the protection and safety of your vehicles.  However, there is less accessibility and it’s not as convenient.  It may also take up more space on your property, which would limit yard use.  Before you decide to build a detached garage, consider your intentions and requirements for the garage itself.
