Awesome Design Ideas For Your Teen’s Bedroom

A teen’s room is their place to be themselves, to unwind and grow, and to experiment with their own creativity. Denying them this originality is denying them a way to display their personality.

If you’re custom building a home, and you have a teenager, you know it can become a struggle when you try to understand what they want in their room.  A teen’s room is their place to be themselves, to unwind and grow, and to experiment with their own creativity.  Denying them this originality is denying them a way to display their personality.  So, what can you do to make your teen’s bedroom as awesome as possible?  Keep these original design ideas in mind when you start planning your home.

A Creative Bed Set-up

Teens are going to spend a lot of time in their beds, from sleeping in late to browsing the internet on their laptops.  Instead of giving them a simple mattress on a frame, why not mix it up a little?  Consider a hanging bed, which is becoming an increasingly popular design trend.  With the weight distributed evenly, it can hang from your ceiling like a swing, and give that little extra something to the overall feel of the room.  There’s also the option of adding storage and cabinets underneath the bed–keep some shelves and drawers in a larger frame area, and a mattress at the top with stairs leading to it.  Think of a loft, but with a solid and functional bottom.

A Reading Nook

Want to encourage your kid to read?  Think it’s important for them to have their own private time to wind down?  A reading nook is the perfect place for that.  Put this little (or large) space next to a window, where natural light can flood into the room.  And make sure the space is outfitted with interesting architecture (like a slanted ceiling) so the space feels original and special to them.

Attic Bedrooms

These have the added advantage of feeling like your teen has a floor all to themselves.  There’s a pretty large space and it’s interesting enough to keep them fascinated.  An attic bedroom can be outfitted with everything they need, including plumbing if you want to add in a bathroom.  When building your home, make sure to design enough room in the attic to feel comfortable, if you’re going this route.
