How to Choose the Right Windows for Your Custom Home

windows

Windows are a big part of design, and can drastically affect your curb appeal. Choosing the right windows can greatly influence the personality your custom home.

When you’re building a custom home, you have the incredible benefit of designing every aspect.  From the floors to the ceilings, from the paint to the door frames, you have control over what you want your home to look like.  Windows are a big part of design, and can drastically affect your curb appeal.  Choosing the right windows can greatly influence the personality your custom home.  So, what should you go with?  There are several options.

Style

You’re going to need to think about what kind of windows you want in regards to style.  There are many options: single, casement, slider, bay, fixed, and more.  Single windows are probably what you’re most used to.  These are the type of windows where the bottom pane can be pushed upwards, while the top pane stays in place.  Casement, awning, and hopper windows swing open from one edge of the window, much like a door.  Slider windows can be slid along a track, bay windows have large sills that extend outward from the home, and fixed windows are inoperable and decorative rather than functional.  You should use a mix of window types throughout your home, as this increases character.  A window type can change the entire look of a room for the better.

What to Choose

Mixing window types throughout a home usually has to do with personal preference, so don’t be afraid to experiment with your ideas.  For instance, a bay window can accompany any other type of window, even side-by-side.  However, a single pane next to a casement window may look a little strange.  Fixed windows should be placed with care, as they are mostly decorative.  The best way to work out window types and placement is to collaborate with your builder.  Custom home builders are experienced craftsmen, and know exactly what windows you need in order to make your home symmetrical and beautiful.
