What Makes a Good Floor Plan?

floorplan

Floor plans are the backbone to a good design, and serve as the most efficient way to see your home before it’s built.

If your dream home appears crystal clear in your mind’s eye, you know that you want it to look exactly perfect.  Without a proper floor plan, your image could crumble.  Floor plans are the backbone to a good design, and serve as the most efficient way to see your home before it’s built.  At Robin Ford, we work with you to make an ideal floor plan, and promise to match it as closely to your idea as we can.  But what should you be looking for in a good floor plan?  Read on to find out.

Match how you want to live.

If you’re someone who loves to entertain, you’ll probably want to put your entrance close to a family room.  Opening up your entrance area would also translate to guests feeling welcomed.  And if you live for peace and quiet, you’ll want to keep your bedroom or other relaxing rooms far away from rooms such as the kitchen, where the most noise will be happening.  Make sure to specify what kind of home you want before you start the drawing.

Safety.

Robin Ford will never build you an unsafe home, but some families have more specific needs than others.  If you need to reach someone quickly on a regular basis, consider keeping their living area on the first floor.  Consider who will be in your home and decide whether or not a staircase or second floor is a good idea.  It’s also a good idea to place children’s bedrooms close to the master bedroom.  You’ll want to have easy access, but you don’t want to crowd their growth by being too closeby.

Flexibility.

When those children go to college and move away, you want to make sure you can use that bedroom for something.  Whether it’s turning it into a guest room or making an office, your spaces need to be flexible.  Try not to build rooms that are only specific for one purpose–for example, a den that would be too small to convert into anything else.  Consider this: if it’s too small to feel comfortable setting up a bed and sleeping in, you should go bigger.
