5 Tips for Designing Your Dream Home

5 Tips for Designing Your Dream Home

The dream home building process can be more than a little daunting, but these five tips can help get you started.

Once you make the decision that your best bet is to custom build your forever home rather than buy and remodel an existing home, it opens the door to so many exciting choices. You get to choose the property, the exterior aesthetic, the layout, the interior design, and more. You get to build your dream home literally from the ground up so that it exactly meets your needs. The process can be more than a little daunting, but these five tips can help get you started.

Plan For Long-term

It is very crucial to design a home that meets your needs now, but it is equally important that it still meets your needs in 10, 20, or even 30 years. Having extra bedrooms now may not seem like a big deal, but if you may add children to your family or have aging parents move in with you, that extra space will be very welcome. If you or other members of your family may need to age-in-place, leave the sunken living room and tiny hallways out of your designs.

Remember How Trends Age

The amazingly popular trends of the day will not always age well – shag carpeting, anyone? It is almost always going to be safer to go with classic designs that never go out of style.

Design A Livable Main Floor

Most people design their home with the expectation that the bedrooms will all be upstairs. That’s fine for now, but make sure that your main floor has a full-size bathroom and a room that could be truly converted into a bedroom, just in case you ever need to start living on only one floor.

Opt For Easy-To-Use

When choosing fixtures, opt for those that are easy to use for any level of ability so that as you age, you don’t have to worry about it. This includes lever door handles, paddle faucets, D-shaped drawer pulls, and at least one walk-in shower.

Watch The Budget

If you’re custom designing a house, it’s a pretty good bet that you want to stay in it for years and years to come. Your budget should reflect this commitment. It isn’t like a quick renovation that is only meant to hold you over for a few years. Ensure that your budget is large enough to fit the stuff your new dream home has to have, but also to fit the things you really want to make it your own personal paradise.
