How to Decide on a Trusted Home Builder

How to Decide on a Trusted Home Builder

There are some tips you can take advantage of to help navigate the home builder selection process.

When you’re building a custom home, you’ll deal with a whole host of critical decisions. Where your home will be, what size it will be, and all the little details from the trim to how many sinks your new custom home will have. Perhaps the most critical decision you’ll end up making is who your home builder is going to be.

Sometimes you may have restraints that determine who you can go with. Most commonly, this means costs. However, there are some tips you can take advantage of to help navigate the home builder selection process. Let’s take a look!

Do Initial Research

Every reputable builder should have a website these days. That website should also include some important details, like photos of their work or details about what kinds of services they can provide. Beyond that, you want to do further research to see how big of a team they are, how long they’ve been around, any sub-contractors they might work with, any references they can supply, and so on. Do whatever research you can to avoid ending up with a subpar home builder.

Find Out an Estimate from the Home Builder

Any competent, capable home builder should be able to give you an estimate. Included in the estimate isn’t just what they expect the project to cost, but also the scope of the work so you understand where your money will end up going to. From there, you should be able to write up a contract based on that estimate, so it’s important to get the details outlined and agreed upon by both parties.

Read Reviews about the Home Builder

Take advantage of all the various reviewing websites out there to see what past clients think of your potential home builder. Google, Facebook, and BBB are all good places to start. If there are negative reviews, look for commonalities between them as that could highlight serious issues. Otherwise, you can ask the builder directly if there are any reviews that concern you and find out their side of the story.

Go With Instincts

Doing your homework is important but at the end of the day, any decision like this heavily relies on your gut instinct. Do these seem like kind people with similar values to yours? That’s good! On the flip side, if something feels off, something likely is off. Work with people who give you a good impression.
