Custom Home Garage Considerations to Make

Building a custom home garage might be a no-brainer, but the decisions don’t stop there.

A custom home garage is one of the best ways to tie your custom home project together. It has its obvious benefits; giving you a place to safely park or otherwise be used as general storage, plus it can always be revamped into a workshop or guest space if your needs ever change. Building a custom home garage might be a no-brainer, but the decisions don’t stop there.

There are a few important considerations you need to make when building a custom home garage to ensure that you get the most out of it. Let’s take a look.

Size / Functionality

You’re likely looking at a custom home garage with the intention of storing your vehicle in an enclosed vehicle, protecting it from the elements or theft, and keeping it in great shape. However, you also want to make sure you have enough space to house as many vehicles as you need or for any additional storage. Larger trucks or SUVs may require larger parking bays.

Likewise, if you want to use part of your garage as a gym or for extra storage, you should keep space in mind. Extra electrical outlets and lighting may be critical if you want to use the space for more. Temperature control can also be important for both storage or additional uses of your custom home garage.

Attached or Detached

One of the biggest decisions is whether you want an attached or detached garage. An attached garage provides convenience; you never have to worry about getting through the rain or snow to get to your vehicle. It’s also great for easily getting groceries into your fridge and that’s why so many people keep a chest freezer or spare fridge in their garage. An attached garage does somewhat limit your design options, however.

On the other hand, a detached garage gives you more design potential and can be ideal if you want a multifunctional space. If you’re looking for a home office or a guest room loft, you may want to consider a detached garage that gives a bit of separation and privacy from your main living space. The one big downside to this is that you may end up spending more on installing electricity and heating/cooling.

Location and Placement

Even if you choose an attached garage, you’re going to want to think about placement. Do you want it visible from the street or should it be obscured by the rest of your home? If your garage is detached, you can get a bit more creative with it, but at the end of the day you want to consider how you will actually interact with your garage and choose a location based on that.
