How to Create Your Ideal Custom Home Design Wish List

How to Create Your Ideal Custom Home Design Wish List

Building a custom home can be a very stressful project without preparation.

Are you overwhelmed by the mere thought of planning and building your custom home? We understand it can be a very stressful project without preparation. At Robin Ford Builders, we can create almost any home that you can think of. But when anything is possible, where should you start? We have compiled an easy and fun list of ways to get started with your custom home design wish list. Here is how to craft the custom home of your dreams.

Think Big, Very Big for Your Custom Home Design

This is the time to toss everything out of the window and allow your imagination to run wild (don’t worry, we’ll add practically back soon). Think of every single possible feature that you’d love to see inside of your dream home. Perhaps it’s some cathedral ceilings, a large bathroom, or a wooden-paneled den with a nifty fireplace or a private suite for your in-laws. Perhaps its heated floors or a walk-in pantry or a music room with padded walls. This is your dream, so dream on!

Prioritize and Organize

Next, grab a piece of paper and divide it into three different columns. In the first column, write everything that is non-negotiable for your custom home design. These count as your “must-haves.” Maybe it is a kitchen with a large island big enough to seat six or a house with accessibility for aging in place. In the following column, write down everything you would love to have, but you could live without if possible. These count as your “nice to haves.” Perhaps this is a fireplace in the bedroom, a fancy appliance in the kitchen, or a guest room. For the last column, write down all the features that you’d include in your home if you could have anything you wanted. These could consist of an elevator, a six-car garage, or a movie theater.

Chat with an Expert

Once you have your ideas on paper, the next step is to schedule a meeting with an expert custom home builder to discuss your ideas. An expert will help you understand how your wish list will impact your budget and timeline for your custom home design list.
