Read This Before You Build Your Sunroom or Screened Porch

A sunroom or a screened porch both present fantastic opportunities to help you experience the outdoors.

It’s always great to have a taste of outdoor living, without dealing with the hassles.  You probably hate bothersome insects such as mosquitoes, and you can’t enjoy the natural sunlight fully during colder months due to frigid temperatures.  However, there is an easy fix to your problems!  A sunroom or a screened porch both present fantastic opportunities to help you experience the outdoors.  When building your home, why not invest in one of these features?  Read on for a little more information regarding sunrooms and screened porches.

Know the Difference

A sunroom is not meant to be used all year long, as it isn’t climate controlled like the rest of your home.  In mild temperatures, the sunroom is a glass-encased area that allows you to enjoy an outdoor living area with all the comfort of being indoors.  A four-season room, however, is essentially a sunroom with climate control, which means it can be used all year.  A screened porch is a deck or porch that is surrounded by screened windows.  It frees you from insects, rainy weather, and snow.  You won’t have to shovel your deck during the winter, and it’s much easier to keep the deck in shape.

Where to Place

The point of a sunroom is to enjoy natural lighting.  Therefore, placement is key.  You don’t want to have the sunroom facing directly east or west, where the sun rises and sets.  If you do, the sun will shine directly into the home, but only for half of the day.  It will be cold in the mornings, warm in the afternoon, or vise versa.  A north or south-facing sunroom is going to regulate temperatures during the day.  For four-season rooms, this can easily save on your energy bill.  Screened porches, however, can be placed wherever you please!  They’re also the less expensive option.  However, if you’re interested in a room where you can enjoy the outdoors while avoiding the annoyances, any of these options could be right for your family.
