What to Know When Choosing a Custom Home Architect

Architect

Looking for a home architect? Here’s what to know before you pick one.

If you’re thinking of building a custom home, that’s great! The reality is though that you need someone with expertise and a passion for design at your side. This is your architect, who will come up with plans for what your home will look like and try to implement as many of your ideas as feasibly possible. It can be a lot to take in though—how much does an architect cost, should they be hired as a third-party contractor, and how can you tell if they’re the right match for you?

How Much Do They Cost?

Architects charge their clients in three different ways. The first is an hourly fee, typically $80-$150 per hour. This can be risky because unless you have no clear idea for how long it should take to design the home, they can change things on you. Flat fees are usually a safer option and you pay them a pre-negotiated rate. Lastly, some charge depending on construction costs.

Obviously this all relies on their experience and how in depth their work is going to be, so the cost of an architect really ranges massively depending on what your needs are. Younger architects with less experience may be looking to build up a portfolio and reputation so they could charge thousands of dollars less than someone more experienced, but that also means they may not bring the same skill with them. Also, if you just need the bare minimum done, you can save a lot of money there.

Are They Right For You?

Just remember that more expensive doesn’t equate to being a better architect. Take a look around and see who feels right for you, who understands your vision and is enthusiastic about the entire build. You’ll also want someone who can work closely with your builder so you’re certain that you’re getting the home you really dreamed of.
